Candidate Statement
Barry Strothmann
I was moved to serve on the Board of Trustees because I feel compelled to give back with my time to this community while also guiding it forward with a fresh take. Moving in 3.5 years ago, it was the community that helped make our new house begin to feel like home and I believe I have skills and ideas to offer to help that community in return. Though the current board works hard I believe they have become complacent and resistant to constructive criticism. I am a fresh set of eyes, and ears, and would give my all to working for this community; be it through removing obstacles, better planning for the future or just hearing out what you have to say with consideration and thought. The administrator works for the board and it is my belief the board works for the community at large; I believe there should be a more open attitude toward all 615 households, prioritizing transparency and inclusion in that spirit. Currently, there is too much worry about litigation and exposure to risk, and while those are valid concerns, they should not be exclusively prioritized at the expense of the community and to the deficit of open mindedness and resourcefulness. Though the current board may be sufficient and, if elected, I would aim for a positive transition and to connect with them, I do think there is room to be constructively critical while also productively working together to do our best for this vibrant community.
I believe I am qualified to take on this role due to my varied past experiences. Primarily, my 20 years as a District Manager for companies like Frito Lay, Pepperidge Farm and Campbells equipped me with many skills that can be directly applied, such as handling budgets, setting goals and working directly with people on my team as well as at our partner stores to communicate effectively, solve problems and work toward shared resolutions. Appropriately prioritizing multiple objectives, planning solutions to known problems and handling management change were also some of the regular situations I handled. As brands were merged and acquired, I also became an apt leader during times of change, easing the pain of transitions, which I would bring with me as I received the baton and apply to any future changes.
A little closer to home, in my 3.5 years living at LHS I have gotten deeply involved, befriending neighbors and joining the following committees: Nomination (3 years), Finance and Insurance (2 years), Building and Grounds (1 year), A.C.C (1 year). I did all of this while still working, utilizing time management and effective task prioritization to ensure all my commitments were kept and that nothing suffered neglect. Though, being involved in my community is nothing new, prior to moving to LHS I served as part of my town’s Youth Sports Athletic Alliance and coached a youth bowling program for 15 years, handling all aspects of the organization from budgeting and administration to enrollment and hands on coaching. Service leadership is a core pillar of my beliefs and I believe I have the right combination of skills and passion to apply that to this community through serving on the Board of Trustees.
